PLEASE NOTE, THIS PAGE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING UPDATED.

The N.A.E.E. endorses the definition of  Environmental Education drafted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature at their Nevada conference (September 1979).

Environmental education is the process of recognizing values and clarifying concepts in order to develop skills and attitudes necessary to understand and appreciate the inter-relatedness amongst people, their culture and biological and physical surroundings. Environmental education also entails practice in decision making and the self formulation of a code of behaviour about issues concerning environmental quality.

ENTITLEMENT

All students are entitled to receive a:

balanced programme of environmental education,
planned programmed of environmental education,
progressive programme of environmental education.

All adults are entitled to receive:

environmental tuition as part of their professional and vocational training.

All citizens are entitled to receive:

free and comprehensive environmental education.

STRANDS

The important elements of environmental education.

Identified are three strands "Education FROM, ABOUT and FOR the environment". These are not mutually exclusive at any stage in formal education. The establishment of an environmental ethic should parallel these processes.

Education from the Environment,  where the environment is  used as a familiar and relevant resource for educational purposes.  In this  way a good  deal of  knowledge and understanding  as  well as the  skills  required  will  be developed by pupils.

Education about the Environment,  with the purpose of developing knowledge and understanding about values and attitudes.

Education for the Environment,  should lead to the inculcation of responsible actions in the environment and for the environment, with an understanding of statutory and accepted codes of behaviour.
